Miller Diversified Announces 100 Acts of Kindness

Estimated Read Time: 3 Minutes

A century in business didn’t just happen. It was the result of a lot of blood, sweat, and tears from our founders… but as we reflected on 100 years in business, we realized that a seed is only as good as the soil it’s planted in (pardon the farm-speak… it’s in our blood). Our community in Toledo means a lot to us, and this beautiful land is the place we’ve called home since the early 1900s. Many acts of kindness from our community have helped us thrive. We put down roots in 1920, and we’ve been growing strong ever since.

How do you say thank you to the place that has been your home, the soil for your roots, for so long? How do you find a way to let the honest and hardworking people of Toledo know how much you admire and appreciate them? Their countless acts of kindness have been integral to our success. How do we explain that without the wonderful people surrounding us — family, friends, clients, partners — we wouldn’t have made it past year one?

So we all put our heads together and decided that in celebration of our centennial, we would be performing 100 acts of kindness. This is our very small way of thanking this community for so many acts of kindness over the years. It’s our very small way of thanking this community, this land, for the gifts given in the last century.

WHAT WE ARE DOING
Our team will be coming up with these 100 acts of kindness, 100 chances to bring a smile to someone’s face or make someone’s life just a little bit easier. They could be small, like starting one of those famous pay-for-the-person-behind you gigs at Starbucks, or taking food to a local soup kitchen. We will also be working on some much bigger projects, which will be announced in the coming year. Anything is fair game… will we be walking dogs? Running 5Ks to raise money for a cause close to our hearts? You’ll have to wait to find out.

WHO WILL BE DOING IT
The leaders and employees of Miller Diversified will be performing these 100 acts of kindness. Our history proves that one person can change lives, so we are empowering everyone on our team to take part in these acts of kindness. We also invite family and friends of Miller Diversified to join us whenever they like. Too much of a good thing is still a good thing, in our minds, especially when it comes to kindness acts.

WHY WE ARE DOING IT
One of the toughest things about being the third generation of a family business is knowing that you have big shoes to fill. We are walking in the shadows of giants, men and women who were hard working, passionate, and brimming with goodness, integrity and honesty. It is our deepest hope that our daily actions are already making our forefathers proud, but to celebrate 100 years, we wanted to do more. Through acts of kindness, we hope that our 100 efforts make our ancestors smile down on us… we want to do them proud through our acts of kindness.

Certainly, we view 100 years in business as a great success, but we might define success differently than your average company. Our favorite definition, the measuring stick we use to determine whether or not we’ve achieved something noteworthy, is outlined well by Ralph Waldo Emerson:

“What is success? To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate the beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded!” Your acts of kindness can truly make the world a better place.”
