The most challenging and rewarding part of this project was the restoration of the 2-story, 90 year-old mural to its original grandeur. The mural had previously been painted over, and the Miller Diversified team helped coordinate the restoration of this historic gem. This project also consisted of adding forced air heating and cooling systems to the main church, upgrading the existing boiler system, building a new narthex and connecting building, restoring the ceramic floors to their original condition, and miscellaneous other interior and exterior repairs.
When the Miller team started this project, our pre-construction process revealed that the architect’s plans would cause the project to exceed the defined budget. Collaborating with the architect, our team led a redesign that preserved the aesthetic but kept the project well within the defined budget. Another challenge of this project was the mural, which had to be carefully restored from underneath many layers of top coat paint. Our team helped source paint for the restoration that matched the compound used in the 1930s when the mural was originally created. Additionally, because the owner wanted to preserve the signature Italian architecture of the original church, our team offered design ideas to reduce costs and provide alternative solutions for hiding the new ductwork within the existing structure of the church. Miller Diversified even helped source the materials which would allow the new narthex to seamlessly match the church itself. To match the unique roof, our team connected with the original tile manufacturer from 1927 to have new tiles made.
